Where rivers pass, a prosperous city can be nurtured. The Seine gave birth to Paris, the Thames gave birth to London, and the Suzhou River gave birth to Shanghai … They are all called the "mother river" of these cities.
Liangxi River is the "Mother River" of Wuxi. For thousands of years, Liangxi River has been nourishing generations of Wuxi people. The river lives alone with Wuxi, Wuxi is also called "Liangxi"; thus the naming for the Juna Liangxi Hotel.
Juna Liangxi Hotel is located in the prosperous commercial center of Wuxi. It was originally built at the beginning of last century as the mansion of Mr. Wang Yuqing, a tycoon in Jiangnan, and has now become an urban business boutique hotel integrating garden features, classical elements and culture.
When it comes to Wang Yuqing, it is necessary to talk about his legendary life.
On August 12, 1879, the 5th year of Guangxu's reign in the Qing Dynasty, a boy was born in the home of a private school tutor in Qingqi Village, a famous township on the outskirts of Wuxi. He was Mr. Wang Yuqing, who was later called "the business talent in Modern Shanghai". He began his apprenticeship at the age of 14. Because he was so good at marketing, in the 29th year of Guangxu's reign, Rong Zongjing and Rong Desheng recruited him to work in Wuxi Maoxin Flour Factory as branch manager. In 1912, with the support of the Rong brothers, Wang Yuqing set up Fuxin Flour Factory in Shanghai. Due to its good operation, Fuxin has developed into 8 factories and a flour exchange was set up in Shanghai within a short period of 9 years. The flour they sold then has set the standard for the market.
Wang Yuqing originally lived in the suburbs. Given that it was not convenient to go to the urban area, he asked a famous feng shui master to help him choose a piece of land in Wuxi. He bought a piece of land in Shilang Lane and spent a lot of money to collect all kinds of famous trees, ancient stones and treasures all over the country. In the 1930s, his private garden was built, which is today’s Juna Liangxi Hotel. In 1927, Mr. Wang Yuqing spent another 200,000 silver yuan to build Liyuan.
Three of the buildings in Liangxi Hotel are Wang Yuqing's old residence, namely, the British-style building Qi Meiju, the French-style building Tianxiang Building and the American-style building Chunhui. It is rare to have buildings with architecture features of three different nations within 100 meters. The styles of the three foreign houses combine Chinese and Western elements together. It has typical architectural features of garden houses in the Republic of China and has witnessed the development of modern industry and commerce in Wuxi. Although the foreign houses have experienced the change with times, their elegant demeanor remains.
